Think Local First Campaign

Did you know that local businesses have a greater economic impact than non-local ones? Recent studies show more of a three to one impact, in fact. They contribute more per employee to local charitable efforts, provide well-paying jobs for the community, and make invaluable contributions to our unique sense of place.

All of our stores are proud to be a part of the Washington-based, Think Local First Campaign organized by the Latino Economic Development Corporation, a member of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies

The goal is to help residents identify local companies, and provide reasons and incentives for choosing those businesses when purchasing products and services.

Look for the campaign logo in all of our stores!

Community Outreach

A Few Cool Hardware Stores is proud to support many local and national organizations including N Street Village, a social services community supporting the homeless and low-income women in DC, The Children's Miracle Network, which raises funds for more than 170 children's hospitals across the country, among others chosen by our employees. Past efforts have included the creation of Ms. Manor, a volunteer committee that raised $145,000 to build a house for Habitat for Humanity in NE Washington.

The story of A Few Cool Hardware Stores started in 2003 in Logan Circle.  We knew the community wanted and needed a hardware store.  Renovations were happening everywhere and traveling to get hardware supplies was slowing them down.

We opened Logan Hardware on March 1, 2003 to great success.  It wasn’t long before people started coming in from other parts of the city asking us to open in their neighborhood, too. It was a special time in Logan Circle with many new retailers opening their doors and providing moral support for us as we tried to learn how to use everything we were selling!

Glover Park Hardware opened exactly two years after Logan Hardware and then in June of 2006 we opened Tenleytown Ace Hardware.

In 2007 we decided to test the waters in a new city – Baltimore.  We took over a 7,800 square foot space in the historic neighborhood of Federal Hill.

In 2008, we focused our efforts on a burgeoning area just east of Chinatown and opened 5th Street Ace Hardware at 1055 5th Street NW. We are located in the City Vista building between K St. NW and New York Ave flanked by Safeway and Busboys & Poets. Then, during the summer of 2009, we headed back to Baltimore and opened Waverly Ace Hardware in the old brick post office building at 601 Homestead Street. Most recently  in July 2010, Old Takoma Ace Hardware joined the Takoma Park, Maryland community, which is literally just over the District line.

Many people don’t know that Ace is a Co-operative company.  Unlike franchise models, Ace’s mission when it began 80 years ago was to provide support and good product pricing to a growing number of independent hardware retailers.  That mission couldn’t be more important than it is today with the growth of big box retailers forcing so many small independent businesses to close.  Today there are more than 4,600 Ace Hardware stores in the United States and around the world.

We are always searching for new spaces and welcome any request.  Please stop by your local hardware store soon.

About Ace

The framework for success. A tradition of service.

Founded in Chicago in 1924, Ace Hardware Corporation has grown to become America's neighborhood hardware retailer. Over the years, we've built the brand from a small group of hardware stores to a network of more than 4,800 locations across the globe.

An independent marketing study confirmed that the Ace Hardware name is one of the most widely recognized trademarks in America. "Ace … The Helpful Place" is the most recognized slogan in the home-improvement industry (The Gallup Organization, October 2006). And today, consumers rely heavily on the helpful advice and product choices they get at their neighborhood stores.

We continue to grow because of the level of service we provide our customers. Backed by a state-of-the-art distribution system, dedicated corporate support, and the knowledge and talents of our 80,000 team members, we look forward to upholding and advancing our 80 year tradition of service, solid corporate citizenship and success.
